Students rushing through the front doors on the first day of school this fall may not notice the changes made during the summer. They may not comprehend the number of hours and the amount of effort it has taken to get the work done in time for school to begin without interruption. The new building addition will not be completed until the year 2001, but the Bertha-Hewitt School has already received a face lift.

The former Bertha Farm Service building’s roof will be patched and the site will be put up for sale. Bluffton Co-op Creamery and Feed, which owned Bertha Farm Service, will merge with Milla Marmen Elevator in October.
50 Years Ago
August 4, 1949
Last week, 17 entrants participated in the frog races with Robert Bastian, Susan Briscoe, and Wendy DeVorak being the winners of the three heats. Robert’s frog won the grand championship. Robert Denniston’s turtle won the turtle races beating out Terry Melzer’s and Dean Erickson’s turtles. The grand championship races of the summer will be a part of the Harvest Festival activities.

“An educational experience I will never forget,” was the expression of Bob Larson, speaking about his participation in the Legion Boys State held at St. John’s University in Collegeville. He mentioned that everyone has an important role in government and it is important to be truly involved in the matters of local, state and federal government.
