At their first fall meeting, members of the Bertha Fire Department went on record in favor of giving public notice that cars should pull over to the side and stop when the fire siren sounds. A near accident the last time the truck was called out prompted this action, Fire Chief Bill Cary said.

A Bertha farmer is in critical condition at the University Hospital suffering from third degree burns received while filling the gasoline tank on his tractor. Morris Smith operates his farm northeast of the village. He stated he was not running the tractor when the accident occurred. After filling the tank he felt gasoline that had dripped on his clothes. Matches in his pocket probably ignited from brushing against the tractor with the resulting fire. Dr. W.W. Will felt his condition required greater treatment so he called the ambulance for the trip to University Hospital.
