After short speeches by several dignitaries, including Superintendent Larry Werder and the mayors of Bertha and Hewitt, the school board broke ground for the new addition to the Bertha-Hewitt School on November 15. The 37,500 square foot addition will include a new gymnasium as well as early childhood classrooms. The $4.6 million bond issue will make this the most expensive building project ever undertaken by the school district. Following the ceremonial groundbreaking, elementary students and teachers took their turn with the shovels. This week contractors began to prepare the site south of the present building for construction.
