The new postmaster of Bertha, Marty Raddatz, and his wife, Mary, have a very fruity hobby. Marty and his wife have an orchard at their home located 2 1/2 miles southwest of Staples. They have approximately 485 apple trees, eight peach, 10 sweet cherry and 25 pear trees. Raddatz started at the Bertha Post Office on November 12. He will be sworn in on December 15.

Members of Cenex Harvest States Cooperative narrowly rejected a merger that would have combined the Inver Grove Heights based firm with Farmland Industries, the largest farmer-owned cooperative in North America. Larry Dickinson, manager of Central Ag, noted the voting results and said, “The news we’re getting is they’re unsure where to go from here.”

Results of the Hewitt Village election remain in doubt as a ruling on a technicality is awaited from Todd County Attorney King. A relatively large vote of 80 was cast and the outcome hinges on whether a write-in vote needs an “X” marked before a name. A number of write-in votes were cast without the “X” mark.

Bertha is laying plans for a busy pre-Christmas season. The season has arrived with the first major snowfall. Many trees have been placed on Main Street. Santa Claus will make his annual visit and will spend the day all around Bertha, handing out treats. A special Santa Claus drawing will be held. Bertha stores are packed with the most complete line of Christmas gifts, more than in many years. Stop by and check them out.
