25 Years Ago

December 15, 1999

The award for Prairie North Conference Coaching Staff of the Year was presented to Jim Sutherland by the Prairie North Conference coaches. Bertha-Hewitt Football Coach Jim Sutherland received the award at the annual football coach’s All Conference selection meeting in December. Sutherland’s reaction to receiving this award, “It is a nice honor and it symbolizes a job well done by the entire football staff at Bertha-Hewitt School.”

Pictured, Santa visited Bertha and the wagon rides began. Doug and Kathryn Kapphahn of Kapp’s Kafe in Bertha stirred up some hot apple cider and provided sandwiches, fresh made doughnuts and ice cream cones for everyone that stopped in to visit.


50 Years Ago

December 15, 1949

Jack Smith was elected mayor of Hewitt. He defeated L.R. Buchholz, 45 to 40. Others elected were: Elmer G. Arndt, councilman; Roy Bowers, treasurer; George Holly, justice of the peace; and Cliff Mills, constable.

Seven very pleased people received gifts with the compliments of the Bertha Hardware and Furniture Co. during their Christmas promotional event. One of the largest crowds in history was in Bertha. Recipients were: Mr. O.L. Johnson, Monarch roaster range; A.J. Rooney, Schwinn bicycle; Mrs. Erwin May of Verndale, superfan; Mrs. Leonard Bluhm, innerspring mattress; Art Froelich, Hewitt, Maytag washing machine; Fred Ziegenhagen, Hewitt Dairy Maid hot water heater; and Harry Maine, home pasteurizer.
