25 Years Ago

December 23, 1999

The Bertha City Council wants to know what the public’s priorities and concerns are on the community center, developing land for new housing and the sewer work. The council members said the community center building would dress up main street and not only help the senior citizens and the legion club, it would also help the ambulance and fire hall. It is not just another tin building in town.

The Rebels wrestling team hosted the 1999 Eagle Valley invitation on Saturday, December 18. Eight teams attended. A new team score record was set by Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale with 276 points. The old record was 233 by BHV in 1998.


50 Years Ago

December 22, 1949

A former Bertha boy is busy these days in Rome, Italy, creating a bust of Pope Pius XII. He is Otto Dahlman, whose father, Reverend Herman Dahlman, was pastor of Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in the late 1920s. Otto is a graduate of the Bertha High School and is a gifted artist and sculptor, but had no formal training.

Over 60 entries were received in the Santa Claus drawing contest conducted by the businessmen of Bertha. The art work exhibited was excellent and of such uniform quality it was difficult for the judges to pick the winners. Third and fourth grade girls winners were Kathryn Cornell, LaVonne Zaske and Dorothy Booen; boys were David Lex, Glen Mallow and Dale Lex.
