The Bertha-Hewitt Sno-Daze king and queen candidates were chosen. The queen candidates are: Katrinah Rach, Jolene Moore, Susie Fosness and Tasha Balbach. The king candidates are: David Adams, Ben Hagen, Nathan Bertrum and Cody Kneisl.

Bertha-Hewitt’s one act play, “Blinded by the Light,” was the Sub-section 22 runner-up. It will be performed at the section contest at Minnewaska on Saturday, February 5, at 10 a.m. David Adams and Laura Freyholtz also received star performances at the Sub-section contest.

The coldest January in at least 10 years accentuated an acute shortage of stoker coal in this area. Local coal dealers, Earl Ahrendt and Guy Williams, were unable to get stoker fuel from any of the major coal companies. Several stoker users were forced to get screenings from the Bertha Co-op Creamery. The creamery gets a carload of screenings each week. Most of the screenings are too fine to use in domestic stokers but some coarser coal is found in the ends of the cars. Sunday night the temperature plummeted to a season low of 38 degrees below.

The Hewitt High School Rangers split a pair of games last week, losing to Battle Lake 51-48 and swamping Menahga 60 to 47.
