News from Bertha and Hewitt's Pasts


25 Years Ago

March 1, 2000

The Bertha-Hewitt first grade students performed for their grandparents on February 25. The musical was called “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. Each student played a part in this musical. Pictured are Josie Sand as wild rice, the state grain; Brenda Wachlin as the lady slipper, the state flower; Ethan Bakken as the red (norway) pine, the state tree; Austin Selvey as the walleye, the state fish; and Morgan Kapphahn as the common loon, the state bird. The students demonstrated square dancing and the Minnesota polka, had their picture taken with their grandparents and were served refreshments after the musical. They also showed grandpa and grandma their classrooms.

David Adams and Tracy Schultz, high school seniors, represented Bertha-Hewitt in the Minnesota State High School League’s Academics, Arts and Athletics Award program. Tracy has been active in volleyball, softball, band, choir accompanist, Business Professionals of America and other school and community activities. David has been involved in football, band, drama, Business Professionals of America, class president, student council president, as well as other activities.


75 Years Ago

March 2, 1950

Herman Sundquist, popular Bertha barber, suffered severe lacerations of a thumb and two fingers when he caught his left hand in a power saw in the basement of his home. His fingers were cleaned and stitched by Dr. C.B. Will. Despite his injuries, Herman is continuing his work.

Announcement was made that Miller Sales and Service has been given the Nash dealership in Bertha. The Nash Co. is featuring two series of cars known as the “Airflyte Series.” They are the Nash Ambassador and the Nash Statesman.
