News from Bertha's and Hewitt's Pasts

25 Years Ago

January 31, 1996

Kristi Niemela, daughter of Deb and Jeff Dague, and Shawn Kuhnke, son of Steve and Kathy Kuhnke, were crowned the Bertha-Hewitt Sno Daze Queen and King during the January 22 coronation. Tuesday was dress-up day with a girls basketball game and parent’s night. The wrestlers also went to Eagle Valley for a triangular match. Wednesday was hat, sucker, and roll your pants day. Thursday was camouflage day. The girls' basketball team played at Pine River-Backus and the wrestlers had their parent’s night. Friday was school spirit day. The boys' basketball team also held their parent’s night.

The Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale wrestlers came away with an impressive 48-19 victory over Osakis.


75 Years Ago

January 31, 1946

Eighteen American Legion and Auxiliary members prepared the shipment of the Victory Clothing Collection from this community. Twenty-three large boxes containing 840 pounds of clothing were shipped to the collection depot on the east coast. The drive was under the auspices of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. S.P. Alden supervised the collection.

Adolph “Bud” Herseth Jr. left on Saturday for Boston where he will attend the New England Conservatory of Music.
