25 Years Ago

October 9, 1996

Air National Guard Airman Teresa K. Ross has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force's mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. Ross is the daughter of Susan J. Ross of Bertha.

The Bertha-Hewitt volleyball team racked up two more regular-season wins last week. They defeated Staples Tuesday evening 3-1 and Pillager on Thursday evening 3-0. On Saturday, the Bears hosted their individual tournament with eight teams. The Bears finished fourth place, losing to Eagle Valley 2-1 in the consolation championship.


75 Years Ago

October 10, 1946

The Modern Pioneer Club will meet Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. A.J. Rooney. A demonstration in refinishing and rug making will be given. The members are urged to attend following a couple of months discontinuation due to harvest and the busy season.

The hot lunch program at the local high school which provides a warm meal at noon for an average of 280 students each school day, is now considered one of the most important extra-curricular projects at the school. Superintendent Anderson pointed out that the most remarkable part of this important school activity was that it is completely self-sustaining, requiring no aid from local taxpayers. Each student pays 60 cents per week or 12 cents per meal.
