Erica Rach, a senior at Bertha-Hewitt High School, has been nominated for the 1996 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. The national awards program created by Wendy’s, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City recognizes the accomplishments of high school senior men and women who excel in academics, athletics and community involvement.

The Bears volleyball had two big gales last week. They defeated Pine River Backus Tuesday night at Parents Night. The conference win kept the Bears undefeated in the Park Region Conference. Thursday the Bears traveled to Sebeka to face the unbeaten Trojans at a conference match. Both teams were fired up for the match as it would probably produce the conference winner. The end result was a pounding by the Bears.

October 17, 1946
The Alexander Company of Minneapolis, in charge of the street surfacing project in this village, began laying bituminous topping this week following much delay, caused by wet cold weather. Village officials believe the surfacing should last a great many years, as extreme care is being exercised in grading and preparing the base for the top. It will make Bertha’s streets the best found anywhere.

The October meeting of the Bertha Women’s Club was held at the school with 60 members in attendance. The principle part of the program included the Women’s Chorus which presented selections that they had previously presented at the Todd County meetings. Hostesses were Madams W.W. Will, Ove Tangen, M.M. Bottemiller, R.H. Engelmann, L.R. Bottemiller, Miss Ida Marie Thiel and Miss Luella Messer. A Halloween theme was used for decorations and food.
