There is a new face at the Bertha-Hewitt School these days. A busy face. But never too busy to give a child that extra bit of attention or a smile. Erna Rausch has the title “Foster Grandparent.” Rausch has been a foster grandparent at the school since last March. At that time, Martha Nokes was also a foster grandparent. However, Martha has not been able to return to school yet this fall. Rausch works 20 hours a week in the elementary, moving from room to room.

The annual Halloween Party held at the Hewitt Community Center and put on by the Hewitt Lioness was a success with many young persons participating in the costume party and games. In the candy guessing game, Kendra Stokes took first place and Nichole Pardo took second. Courtney Stach won the pumpkin decorating contest. The party was held on Halloween evening.

Two hundred twenty-seven residents of the village availed themselves of one of the greatest privileges enjoyed by an American citizen when they cast their ballots last Tuesday for the candidates of their choice to fill high offices of the county, state and nation. The vote was one of the hugest ever polled in an off-year election.

Bertha High School’s six-man football team captured the first championship trophy awarded by the newly organized Park Region Conference when they defeated the Parkers Prairie team on the Wadena High School field by a score of 39-6.
