The Bertha-Hewitt School Age Child Care Program, called The Hangout, had a successful summer and is off to a good start for the 1996-97 school year. The Hangout co-providers, Jean Shaw and Angela Hurtig, describe the purpose of the program as “caring for Bertha-Hewitt school-age children of working parents, K-6 grades. The Hangout, which is housed in the home economics room at the school, provides an educational/recreational environment with a minimum of the formal structure under adult supervision.

The city of Bertha is going to be writing up a pretreatment agreement between the city and Northern Food and Dairy. The agreement comes after the city received a letter from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency requesting them to submit a revised pretreatment agreement in order to set limits on the amount and substance that Northern Food and Dairy discharges in the sewer treatment plant. The city was issued a notice of violation on September 20 from the MPCA.

Melissa Samuelson of Bertha, a sophomore majoring in music education at Jamestown College, performed during a voice student recital in October at the college’s Voorhees Chapel. Samuelson, the daughter of Vicki and Tom Larson of Bertha, performed a variety of musical selections at the recital.

Tammy Odland, owner and operator of Tammy’s Bar and Grill, came to the council with her attorney Bill Jones to discuss relicensing her bar. It was also a written request from the city. The letter sent to Odland stated that Mayor Harold Tritsch has asked that she come personally for a hearing on the conditions of the renewal. Jones said that he would ensure that Tammy insurances the facility.
