With bare soil within a few feet of the river, Dan Deibele realized that there was probably a worrisome amount of soil loss into the river, carried there by persistent winds and spring runoff. A contract with Todd County Soil and Water Conservation District required that Deibele’s two and one-half acres remain in grass and trees for 10 years. Deibele has also fenced off an additional four acres for pastures. Under the program, Deibele received a one-time payment of up to $300 per acre to maintain the fences, trees and other construction on the ag land.
