Fire Chief Walt Lucas resigned on January 9 after 15 years. Walt joined the department in 1970 and became chief in 1982. Lucas said he is setting the stage for his retirement from the Browerville Fire Department on January 5, 1998. That will be the date of the first meeting of the new year and will make 27 years of distinguished services for Walt. William Buhl was sworn in as fire chief.

Greg Salber was able to answer more of the questions in 10 rounds of questioning to take first place in this year’s Geography Bee at Christ the King School. Gene Tschida and Jesse Polak showed they also knew a lot about the world when they tied for second place.
50 Years Ago
January 27, 1972
The Big Lake Sportsman’s Club will host its annual fishing contest on February 6 at Big Lake. Club members are now active in distributing tickets.

The Knights of Columbus will hold a Valentine’s Dinner Party at Horseshoe Lake.
