Memories Gone By

News from Browerville's Past

Visiting and chatting over a cup of coffee with Bill Burtlet’s four children had a more significant purpose than catching up on family news. Bill Burtlet, father of Jenny Schlect, learned about 10 months ago that he would need a kidney transplant to sustain life in a quality manner. All four of his children had gone through extensive testing that determined that his son’s kidney did not meet the criteria for a match, but all three daughters could be eligible donors. After much discussion about each daughter’s position in their lives, the oldest of the three, Jenny Schlect, unselfishly offered to donate one of her kidneys to her father.

Christ the King School received an original Joan Simpson water color painting from her daughter Tina Simpson. When accepting the painting, Catherine Krog, principal, said, “It is with much pride and honor that we received their beautiful original painting in memory of a marvelous teacher and friend. It will hang in a special place in the faculty lounge.”

Amateur nights sponsored by the Browerville Commercial Club will start Saturday evening, June 5, at 8:30 p.m., with a band concert every other Saturday evening throughout the coming summer. The lots between the Hallek and Woell barbershops on Main Street will be the scene of the event. Three prizes will be given each Saturday evening to the three best amateurs. A final prize will be given at the end of the season. Any amateur in singing, instrument playing, etc., can leave a name and number at the Blade office. Everybody is welcome at these gatherings—come and have a good time.

The Browerville Commercial Club is sponsoring the Dairy Days to be held in Browerville on Saturday and Sunday, June 19-20. The month of June is set as National Dairy Month, so committees are at work on plans in connection with the celebration. The celebration will follow in line with former doings in Browerville, done up in the old-fashioned way. There will be rides, bingo, baseball, free pasteurized milk, races, speakers, greased pigs, drum corps, a band, tagged chickens with prizes attached, and a coronation dance for the dairy queen.
