Department of Natural Resources Forestry Officer Mike Warczecha from Long Prairie examined elm trees in Lorraine Sadlo’s yard in Browerville for possible Dutch Elm Disease. Mike said that his office is getting more calls as young elm trees are maturing. He explained that the disease runs in cycles and that as young trees mature, the beetles crawl into the bark and then infect the tree.

On a roll call vote, Todd County Commissioners unanimously agreed not to proceed with an Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) on a proposed expansion of an existing animal feedlot on Pixley Lake in Birchdale Township. A petition signed by over 40 residents had requested the EAW after Bersheit Farms had applied for a county feedlot expansion permit for 372 animal units. The board reached the decision as a mandatory EAW is only required for 1000 or more animal units.

After 20 years of searching, two brothers and their sister finally had located each other in Minneapolis and had a family reunion on August 5. Also, today, for the first time since 1928, they saw their father. Margaret, 26; Everette and Phil, 21 and 20, and their father Gustave immediately thought about the continuing search for another sister, Alice, 21, whom none had seen for 17 years. Their story, a tragic one, began back in 1928 in a tarpaper one room shack in Alvwood, Minnesota when their parents, Olda and Gustav Erickson, were divorced. Both parents wanted custody, but the court ruled neither parent was fit to have the kids and sent them to a state school in Owatonna. Everett, who was 17 months old at the time, was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Axel Erickson (no relation) of Browerville.
