25 Years Ago

June 10, 1999

“There’s something special in every child,” Barb Spychalla said, and that philosophy has been her guiding principle through her lifetime teaching career. For many, the opportunity to retire early on a generous retirement program would also be considered a type of “special gift”, but for Spychalla it’s a mixed blessing. “It’s different thinking about closing up shop after 38 years. Every day has been a challenge and I really look forward to all of them. It’s hard to quit now. It’s like closing a chapter on a book.”

Laurel Kowal stopped by the Blade office with an old pop bottle from the Browerville Bottling Works that he got from his parents, the late Leo and Ludvina Kowal. Laurel said the bottle, that probably contained orange pop, is dated on the bottom 1804-1878.


75 Years Ago

June 9, 1949

The second annual “Dairy Day” to be held at Browerville on Sunday, June 19, is an event not only of local interest, but one that fits in well with the entire agricultural pattern of the northwest. The Browerville Commercial Club is sponsoring the local Dairy Day. This annual event will be a real treat for residents of this area. Prominent speakers and may other attractions have been arranged, include a ball game between the Clarissa-Browerville Cubs. A huge parade is planned with the Little Falls Winter Wonderland marching unit taking a prominent part.

In conjunction with the Community Recreation Program, a men’s softball league is being organized. Games will be played on weekday evenings at the high school athletic field with each team playing one game a week. At the present time, three teams are in the process of organizing here in town. They are being handled by Milt Olin, Herman Holler and Walt Kotula.
