January 13, 2000

Ask Del Shatka what she likes about her job and she will answer, “It’s very, very rewarding and I love it.” But the truth of the matter is the students she works with love her, too. Del is working as a ‘Foster Grandparent’ through a state program. The funding for Del’s position is provided by Catholic Charities.

For their first order of business on January 4, the Todd County Commissioners appointed Commissioner Ken Sorenson as the new board chairman. He replaces Stan Sumey, who served last year. Commissioner Scotty Greenwaldt was appointed the vice chairman.


75 Years Ago

January 12, 1950

The Browerville Independents basketball team defeated the Swanville Legionaries 48 to 46 last Thursday on the local floor. This is the second time the locals have defeated the Swanville team this year. The first time they stopped Swanville on their home floor by one point in overtime. The game last Thursday was a nip and tuck affair all the way. The game was tied 46-46 with 30 seconds left to play when Jack Dressen broke away from his man and drove in for a lay-up putting the locals ahead 48-46.

Amid the advertising copy coming in this week was a new and unusual order. It requested the following be inserted in the classified section: Homes Wanted: Permanent adoptive homes are needed by 10-12 year old children who have lost the care and support of their parents. The children need the security of an adoptive home and the love and guidance of parents. Write to the State Division of Social Welfare, 117 University Avenue, St. Paul.” Jarel Leirfallom, director of the state welfare division, and his staff have decided to resort to newspaper advertising to find homes for some of the older boys and girls in the division’s care.
