Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura stopped in Long Prairie Wednesday as part of a two-day swing through central Minnesota to talk to citizens about the legislature, his transportation plan and telecommunications. Ventura caused quite a stir in Long Prairie and drew several hundred people, hoping for the chance to meet him.

The fourth and fifth graders at Christ the King School had an interesting visitor in their classroom. Aaron Nalezney, a cousin of a fifth grader, Jennie Buhl, told of his four week trip to Israel. They learned lots of things about the country, people and local customs. Because of his talk, students were exposed to some career ideas and possibilities. Aaron, a senior at the U of M, is an international relations major and hopes to visit South America next.

The Browerville Commercial Club, at a meeting of the Board of Directors on February 9, endorsed the following: In order to lend our individual and group influence to combat the drift toward socialism by route of excessive taxation, we, the members of the Browerville Commercial Club, agree to use every means at our command to stimulate the economy in government during the week of March 12-20. For that purpose we herewith designate that period as Tax Economy Week. We sincerely hope the press and radio, and other individuals, organizations and communities support this “grass-roots” effort.

Four local boys were awarded their first class badges at a “Court of Honor” held in St. Peter’s Church basement on Wednesday night, February 8. The evening was in the manner of an open house sponsored by local Cub Scouts and local Boy Scouts. Roman Iten, cubmaster and the “cubbers” presented a program in connection with the “crusade” of the Fortieth Anniversary of Scouting, To Strengthen The Arm of Liberty.” The scouts opened their portion of the program with a Tenderfoot Investiture Ceremony. Lyle Hennen, James Iten and Charles Heid were invested with their Tenderfoot badges. Douglas Plotnik was the only scout to be invested in the second class of scouting after a colorful candle-lighting ceremony.
