A local baseball legend’s legacy has been brought to light in a video game.
MLB The Show 23 was released on March 28, with a new twist. Sony, which partnered with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) and NLBM President Bob Kendrick to bring Negro League stars to MLB The Show.
This features eight of the greatest Negro League players: Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson, Buck O’Neil, Rube Foster, Hilton Smith, Hank Thompson, John Donaldson and Martín Dihigo, in a new game mode called “Storylines.” This is just the first season of Storylines, and it will continue in future seasons. These stories are narrated by Kendrick.
Among those eight baseball legends, one has significant ties to Bertha—John Donaldson.
Watching Donaldson’s Storyline, at one point describing him as a “hired hand” you will notice Donaldson’s team jersey says “BERTHA” emblazoned across the chest.
“The dazzling left-handed pitcher whose feats you could say were something right out of a video game,” said Kendrick.
Donaldson’s legendary story is now reaching a whole new audience and an all-new generation. . .
