News from Eagle Bend's Past

25 Years Ago

July 1, 1998

Five years ago, Lions Club members from Minnesota began collecting used eyeglasses to help people in developing nations who are too poor to buy glasses of their own. On Sunday, May 2, the millionth pair was brought to the Lions statewide convention in Bloomington. Kermit Olson of the Eagle Bend Lions Club has been collecting eyeglasses for the club for well over five years. His collection box is set up just inside the front door at Eagle Bend Farm and Lumber Supply.

Marcy Motl, Eagle Bend, and Nancy Lucas, Motley, will be paying more attention to the weather this summer. Their 13-year-old son and grandson of Jeremy Jasmer of Aldrich, his father Jerry, and Jerry’s brother Rick will be making a lengthy bicycle trip. Jeremy Jasmer, who will be an eighth grader at Staples, will be the youngest biker to make the 1600-mile bike trip that will follow the Mississippi River.


66 Years Ago

March 28, 1957

It is known that individuals use the fire escape in the back of the Eagle Bend Liquor Store as a place to play. Anyone caught will be dealt with accordingly. This fire escape is village property.

According to a recent report, Joe Perino, president of Central Minnesota Television Co., and John McCarten, who have been in Washington concerning the TV station to be constructed near Alexandria, notified authorities in Alexandria last week that those parties who had applications at Channel 7 at St. Cloud have withdrawn their applications, therefore leaving no opposition for the new station in the Alexandria area.
