News from Eagle Bend's Past

October 30, 1996

A strong wind or tornado tore the roof and part of the wall off a machine shed at the Roger Dittberner farm last Saturday afternoon. He also lost the top of a silo. His farm is located near the northwest end of Lake Miltona. A mobile home was also reported damaged down by the lake. The Eagle Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Miltona Fire Department when tornadoes were reported in the area. The Eagle Bend firemen were sent back home as soon as they arrived in Miltona when they learned the damage was not as severe as first reported. Tornadoes skipped around a five-county area on Saturday causing considerable damage and some injuries. A dairy barn west of Deer Creek was hit with 20 cows reportedly lost.

Fred Bisel, with his meat cutter Aaron Klimek, has recently purchased the Eagle Bend Meat Market and built a passageway joining the building to his store, Bisel’s Supermarket. He has spent the past five weeks cleaning and remodeling the meat market to make it a usable and sanitary plant. His immediate plans are to process venison and make sausage. He will continue to offer custom slaughtering of beef and hogs on the farm.

The second annual meeting of the Eagle Bend Senior Citizens Day Center was held on Thursday evening, October 14. Board members whose terms expired were Mrs. Reid (Nina) Steinka and Reverend William B. Weinerth. As Reverend Weinerth chose not to be a candidate for re-election, due to the fact he is engaged in so many other activities and projects he does not have adequate time to devote to it, Linden Heldt was selected to replace him. Mrs. Steinka was re-elected to her post of treasurer for another two years.
