Eagle Bend and its surrounding residents and this newspaper were catapulted into the national news by a New York Times story published on Monday, November 18. The story by Nina Bernstein is about innocent children, a convicted sex offender, the Minnesota State Prison and the internet. It has implications for prison inmate access to information and technology as well as uses of the internet. A lucrative telemarketing business called Insight Inc., run by inmates of the Stillwater State Prison, came under investigation about two years ago after a WCCO television report about the program. One innate reportedly left the prison with $106,000 he earned working for Insight. The Minnesota Department of Corrections discovered a list of names on a prisoner’s computer in November 1994. The FBI seized files and equipment and discovered a list of over 3000 children’s names compiled from 1987-1992 and included entries such as “Latchkey kids,” “cute” and “Little miss pageant winner.” Eagle Bend had 35 children on the list. Sandy Baso and Char Greene appeared on camera for CBS news to make people aware of the problem.
