Reviving hope: Wadena County welcomes back Relay for Life after five year hiatus

by Trinity Gruenberg

The Wadena County Relay for Life is making a comeback after a five year hiatus.

The last Relay for Life event was held in 2019. As they moved forward with plans for 2020, COVID hit and it was shut down.

“In 2019, we were getting a bigger audience and learning what was working, then it all got shut down,” said Relay for Life Chair Travis Allen.

With the help of the Wadena Area Chamber of Commerce, Relay for Life is back and so is the previous chair who was Allen of rural Hewitt.

“It was something I liked to do and I always hoped it would come back,” shared Allen.

He began participating in Relay for Life in 2010 joining the WalMart team. Through the years he became co-captain of the team, then the team’s captain. A representative talked Allen into running the show in 2018, with help from the committee’s previous chairman.

“This will be my third official year,” explained Allen.

His interest in helping Relay for Life turned personal after some of his close family members fought cancer, including his great uncle who lost the battle....
