Roe v. Wade overturned
The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey on Friday, June 24, removing the constitutional right to abortion.
What is Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey?
The landmark and most controversial case of Roe v. Wade was started by Norma McCorvey, known by the legal pseudonym “Jane Roe” who in 1969 became pregnant with her third child.
McCorvey wanted to have an abortion, but it was illegal in Texas, where she lived. Her attorneys, Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee, filed a lawsuit on her behalf in U.S. federal court against McCorvey’s local district attorney, Henry Wade, alleging that Texas’s abortion laws were unconstitutional.
The lawsuit was presented to a three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas that ruled in her favor and declared the Texas abortion laws unconstitutional. The parties appealed this ruling to the Supreme Court of the United States. . .
