Severe storm drops baseball-sized hail in Knob Hill area

by Trinity Gruenberg

A severe thunderstorm rolled through the area Saturday night, dropping softball-sized hail in the Knob Hill area of rural Wadena.

Damage reports included car windshields, siding, windows, patio furniture, and many trees snapping or being completely uprooted from the storm.

Large hail, ranging from 3 to 4 inches, fell around parts of Todd County.

The Horseshoe Lake area of Browerville received some large hail, and wind speeds around 65 miles per hour were reported in Todd and Wadena counties.

A reported tornado struck Melrose with 86-mile-per-hour winds, uprooting many trees and damaging buildings. The National Weather Service reported that a trained spotter had reported the tornado touchdown and that it was on the ground for four minutes.

Storm Spotter Matthew Koscielski reported: “Reports via Todd County Amateur Radio Emergency Service/Skywarn. Hail up to golf ball size from Bertha to Long Prairie. One of my fellow spotters lost his windshield near Clarissa. I had to abandon spotting at 24 and 11 due to hail.”
