Sobriety, art and nature: The heart of Off Grid Recovery Community

by Trinity Gruenberg

An unassuming farm is turning into a place for community to gather and celebrate life and recovery. It all began with Jason Adams’ vision of the Off Grid Recovery Community, a place for community-based events which includes people and pets.

Adams found the 28-acre rural Verndale farm and moved from Plymouth in April. He was raised in Crystal and raised his family in Buffalo.

“I was looking for land. I was looking for some peace and quiet. I wanted to get away from the chaos, the hustle and bustle. I wanted to reconnect with nature and people because I wasn’t getting that in the city. Everybody is so busy standing in line, not looking at each other,” explained Jason.

He has great memories with his stepdad building an A-frame cabin near Crosby and escaping to it on the weekends.

“I remember going there as a kid and making the drive and getting into town and just the peacefulness and the difference in the people and in what you did in the course of a day, I’ve always wanted to get back to it,” he said.

He has three boys, Wyatt, 17, Gavin, 21, and Josh, 25, who are busy with their own endeavors, but like to help their dad when they are able.

Jason, 48, saw how hard it is to navigate the health system when it comes to finding help with an addiction for yourself or loved ones. Having beaten an addiction to cocaine in his early twenties and coming from a family of recovering addicts, he set out to try something new, not just for his own family, but for the greater good of bringing community together to support and encourage one another. He plans to do this through music, art, animals, nature and/or group meetings....
