Solbergs incorporate sustainable farming practices
by Trinity Gruenberg
The Sustainable Farming Association (SFA) and the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship (DGA) hosted a pasture walk at Seven Pines Farm in Verndale, owned by Kent and Linda Solberg.
Angie Walter, the Central Minnesota Education Coordinator for SFA and DGA, led the pasture walk with Mikayla Birschbach who is in her last six months of apprenticeship at Seven Pines with the Solbergs.
Discussion topics included raising calves on pasture, fencing and panels used to raise calves, and managing pastures with drought conditions.
Linda explained when they purchased the property it had not been farmed in six years with cornstalks still laying on the ground, leaving no biology left in the soil.
In 2007, they looked into irrigation that ended up being out of their price range. That fall, Kent hurt his knee. He used that time to research options with cover crops and how other areas were growing crops in non-irrigated sandy soil.
Angie started with DGA two years ago and she and her husband have a 100 cow organic dairy and are master grazers. . .
