The end of an era . . .The Heartland Market ceases print publication after 50 years
by Karin L. Nauber
This week will be the last week that you will receive a copy of the Heartland Market, an advertising supplement to area newspapers. The publication will cease at the end of July 2022.
Locally, the newspapers that are affected are the Independent News Herald and the Verndale Sun.
According to one of the original founders, Gene Prim of the Barnesville Record Review, “The Market was founded 50 years ago this summer as an advertising supplement to area newspapers. As a service to advertisers, the combined circulation of a number of newspapers was offered, greatly expanding any single newspaper’s coverage. The Market eventually evolved into a ‘hardware’ publication with the bulk of the advertising coming from car dealerships, implement and heavy equipment dealers as well as auctions, auctioneer listings and sales bills.”
But because of the many changes brought about by COVID-19, car dealerships along with everyone else faced shortages. . .
