The man behind the memorial
by Kat Wiirre
When driving through the city of Hewitt on Sunday, November 28, you may have noticed a gentleman putting up a new addition to the Hewitt Veterans Memorial.
A metal plaque displaying the flag with men and women saluting was a welcomed addition to the Memorial Park.
The gentleman Donald Fitzgerald (Fitz) is a retired Vietnam Veteran. He spent a total of 26 years serving in the military. He served in the Army from 1965 to 1974. He served in the Navy from 1979 to 1991. Five years of his time was spent in Vietnam.
As a result he received five purple heart medals. He was also a prisoner of war for 89 days.
He spoke passionately about his service to his country. He heard from other fellow veterans that they wanted to go to Vietnam but were sent elsewhere. . .
