Thompson and Captain lead the Raiders

by Coach Michael Arvidson

It was a busy final week before the Christmas break for BHVPP. A triangular, an invitational, and a quadrangular before an anticipated break. The Raiders have not been full strength since the opening weekend as injuries and illness have hampered us as of late. We traveled to Frazee on Tuesday, December 14, for a triangular against the 4th ranked Royalton/Upsala squad and the lean & mean host team.

The first dual was going to be tough, but we wrestled well after an inspiring performance from Justin Olson out of the gate. Down 5-0 early, Justin battled back to knock off his ranked opponent with a late takedown. David Revering and Deagen Captain each added major decisions and Reese Thompson dominated his ranked opponent to have the score 18-14 at the midway point. However, the Royals flexed their muscles taking the last seven matches and the dual 54-14.

The nightcap was a tale of two halves. Olson cashed in a pin followed by three straight forfeits. Revering picked up a fall and Captain and Thompson earned hard-fought decision for the 36-0 lead. However, the Hornets would come back to sting the Raiders winning the final seven matches and the dual 41-36. Bonus points proved to be the difference as they did a better job of getting off their backs in the 7-7 split. The individual match results were as followed:

The usual Big Bear tournament was canceled for Covid precautions, so three-fourths of the teams went to Pequot Lakes as they pulled off a great tournament in two weeks of preparation. The Inaugural Jackhammer Invitational was as tough as it sounds as a hard hat and lunch pail would be recommended to reach the podium in some very talented weight classes.

The Raiders, still battered with injury and illness, only entered ten wrestlers advancing only three to the second day of competition.

As a team, we just didn’t have our best performance. We made too many mistakes, and we paid for them costing us winnable matches. Two guys that brought their hard hats were Deagen Captain and Reese Thompson. Deagen went 5-2 on the weekend losing to the 3rd place finisher twice. Even a potentially dangerous situation in the consolation quarterfinals couldn’t stop his determination to get as high on the podium as he possibly could.

Reese continued his momentum from his big win on Tuesday as he steam rolled for an opening round tech fall. A quick pin in round two set up a rematch of the WDC finals in which he got pinned on the opening weekend. Not so fast, hold the chalk….this time Reese controlled the ties and the match as he avenged the loss putting him into the semifinals and guaranteeing him a podium finish before bed on Friday. Saturday morning arrived and so did his state champion opponent who sent Reese to the wrestlebacks. However, he bounced back with a fall and a decision to earn 3rd. Reese had an impressive 5-1 weekend beating the 4th, 5th, and 6th place winners with his only defeat coming to the champ as he is wrestling at his best. On Tuesday, it was back up to Pine River for a quad as the first matchup was against Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena. Orran Hart started the Raiders with a come from behind win. Olson added a forfeit before the Bears took the next two matches. Revering and Deagen Captain won back-to-back for the 18-10 lead. The Bears would take five of the last seven matches wrestled, but the losses accumulated by the Raiders saved bonus points and would be the difference as they battled for the 30-28 victory.

The middle leg of the quad was against the 5th ranked host Road Crew. The Raiders managed to take three matches in the dual as Bennet Arceneau, Revering, and Thompson got their arms raised. The last round squared us off against a conference and section foe in Osakis. The Silverstreaks got the lead early as they took two of the bottom three weight classes before BHVPP ran away with the dual. Hart, Arceneau, Tristan Hubbling, Revering, Deagen Captain, Thompson, Holden Truax, Lincoln Finck, Justin Koehn, Braden Shamp, and Hunter Strom all contributed to the 59-9 final.
