Todd County Board of Commissioners: Temporary decision made on personnel matter

by Karin L. Nauber

Some of the Todd County Board of Commissioners felt that they needed more information in order to make a decision about a request.

Background: As of October 28, 2024, employee #0486 has exhausted all Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)-protected leave. The subject has submitted both a written request for a leave of absence and the required doctor’s statement.

Per the union contract, and with board approval, this employee may be granted unpaid medical/disability leave for up to one year.

It appears that the position would not be able to be filled if the leave was granted.

Human Resource Official Nellie Johnson said that this employee is retirement eligible and could take that route.

At one point in the discussion, Commissioner Randy Neumann made a motion to not approve the request. There was no second, so the motion failed.

Commissioner Lew Noska asked if there would be repercussions if they didn’t approve the request?

Johnson said that the employee had already used up the 12 weeks of FMLA. The employee’s position would no longer be protected if they do not approve it.

The department this employee works in has said that they do need help and have not been able to meet certain deadlines because this employee is not there.

Neumann said that they sometimes have to make the hard decisions....
