Verndale City Council: Discussion centers on future of police department

The Verndale City Council held their regular meeting on February 13.
Police Department
Police Chief Cory Carr’s resignation was effective on February 8. A public hearing was held at the Verndale Fire Hall on Saturday, February 4.
Council members sought public input on the future of the police department. The options included: dissolve the police department and sell the equipment; keep the police department and realign with what the community needs and wants; or contract with the county, which coverage would not be as good to help enforce city ordinances.
Dissolving the department or contracting with the county would leave the school without a liaison officer.
There was an applicant for the full-time officer position. This person is fresh out of school. There is also a part-time officer that would like to continue, but there needs to be a Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) for the part-timer to . . .
