Verndale City Council: Downtown may get a facelift

by Trinity Gruenberg

The Verndale City Council held its regular meeting on November 8.

Wellhead Protection Plan

Aaron Meyer with Minnesota Rural Water discussed the wellhead protection plan to reassess it for the next 10 years to ensure safe drinking water. The city has a Drinking Water Management area they have to protect. The city is vulnerable with sandy soil and high nitrates which resulted in the construction of the treatment plant. The council can apply for grants to assist in being proactive in protection. They look at potential risks and responses for protection as well as an emergency plan for mechanical failure or natural disasters. The Department of Agriculture has a groundwater protection plan and is working with farmers on nitrates. Language was added to the plan for the farmers to get assistance for cover crops

The plan will go back to the state for approval in 90 days. The Department of Health has already approved the plan. The council approved the wellhead protection plan. . .
