Verndale School Board: District enters into settlement agreement with Cox
by Trinity Gruenberg
The Verndale School Board held its regular meeting on May 2.
Settling Claim
Trevor Helmers, the school’s attorney, explained a former employee had filed a lawsuit against the school. A closed session was held to discuss their options. When the meeting reopened the school decided to pay a settlement.
The case was filed under the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by former employee Cody Cox citing discrimination, filed last July.
Cox was a probationary teacher whose contract was not renewed. Cox claimed he was denied reasonable accommodations and held to a different standard than other co-workers. He claimed he was terminated over “discriminatory animus.”
The school’s insurance company took over the defense for this matter and brought in Helmers. . .
