Verndale School Board: Playground project advances with ADA focus
by Trinity Gruenberg
The Verndale School Board held their regular meeting on Monday, October 7.
Playground Update
Chris Youngbauer, representing the Playground Committee, discussed ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) compliance and a checklist. One issue is that they need to have at least one piece of playground equipment accessible to kids with disabilities. As of now, they don’t. They also need a surface that can be utilized by those in wheelchairs and a separate area for early childhood.
The playground equipment quote asked for 50% down so they can proceed to order the equipment. Due to their bylaws, the committee learned they cannot use Freshwater Education District’s 501c3. Youngbauer explained they would pursue creating a generic 501c3 for the school to develop a foundation for more than just the playground equipment to seek grants. There was $42,226 raised for the playground, $110,000 in LTFM, and $25,000 from the Community Education fund to be utilized to pay for the equipment.
The Playground Committee has sent fundraising letters. The school is putting the playground information back on the website.
Approved paying for half of the cost of the playground equipment to ensure delivery on time and a 20% savings on the total cost.
