Verndale senior citizens learn the art of making maple syrup

A small group of Verndale Senior Citizens traveled to the Sugar Shack in rural Sebeka on April 1 to learn the process of making maple syrup.
Les Schwartz, with the help of his brothers Doug and Larry and his cousin Gene, was busy boiling sap to make maple syrup.
Between his property and his sister’s property, about 400 maple trees were tapped this season. They received help from the sophomores from the Henning School. Also, PBS from Bemidji filmed a segment of the syrup process.
Schwartz showed the seniors the different taps used to tap the trees and how the buckets attach to the tree to collect the sap.
In the early spring, the sap starts running with the warmer days. . .
