Very unique pens are made by hand
by Trinity Gruenberg
There is just something about a good pen that people seem to crave. Most people have a favorite one because of the way it writes, the way it feels in their hand or just the way it looks.
Two retired gentlemen shared their new pen-making hobby with the Verndale Senior Citizens at their monthly meeting on March 1.
Gregg Hagen, 70, and Winston Chaffin, 74, brought a large assortment of their handmade pens, ranging from the typical to gun and bullet-shaped.
The duo are neighbors on Pickerel Lake. Hagen is a Wadena native and retired machinist, married to Karen who is originally from Bluffton. Chaffin is retired from real estate and married to Sharon, Avis Paulsen’s daughter.
They both shared a passion for woodworking. Originally they had their own workspaces. Then Hagen decided to move his equipment over to Chaffin’s work shed.
They started out making a Victorian work table with various clamps, and three wooden rocking chairs that took 150 hours each to make.
Hagen explained Chaffin became interested in making their own pens about three months ago, and they have gotten “a little carried away." . . .
