Wadena County Commissioners: Commissioners debate administrator versus coordinator models

The Wadena County Commissioners held their regular meeting on January 21.
Retirements Recognized
Sue Pauly and Deb Nelson were recognized for their years of service to the county as they prepare to retire.
Sue Pauly has worked with Wadena County Public Health since April 16, 2007. Over the last 17 years, she has served multiple functions within Public Health and has been a Union Steward for over 10 years. Her last day with Public Health is January 28.
Deb Nelson, Financial Assistance Supervisor, will retire on January 24 after 41 years of working in the income maintenance area in various human services agencies. She has been with Wadena County for almost 21 years and has been in this role for 4.5 years.
Administrator Search
County Attorney Kyra Ladd brought the job descriptions for county administrator and coordinator. Commissioner Murlyn Kreklau expressed concerns about hiring an administrator, stating that he does not believe it is the right fit for Wadena County. He feels the challenges the county has faced previously with an administrator would not be resolved by giving someone that title. Kreklau suggested looking at a coordinator model instead, as it would allow the board to maintain more involvement and control rather than delegating authority to an administrator. Other commissioners supported the administrator model but emphasized the need for strong communication and support staff to ensure the administrator can effectively manage county operations....
