Wadena County Commissioners: Commit to full-time 4-H funding, Bell Hill to close

The Wadena County Commissioners held their regular meeting on Tuesday, November 12.
4-H Extension Program
Several people spoke on behalf of 4-H to urge the commissioners not to reduce the program.
Barbara Johnson from Sebeka shared how 4-H has been a huge part of her children’s lives, providing them opportunities to excel in areas where they didn’t fit in with other extracurricular activities. Her children lived for the county fair, state fair, and various 4-H shows and competitions. 4-H gave them a chance to showcase the work they did every day on the farm. Her children now carry the 4-H pledge and model of “making the best better.” Barbara urged the board not to cut 4-H funding to 50%, as it provides something for everyone in the community, not just farm kids.
Nathan Blashack is a current 4-H state ambassador. He shared how 4-H has been a huge part of his life. His youth leadership journey grew as he became a county and state ambassador. He’s seen the differences between counties and states regarding the 4-H programs offered but says there are common threads that unite everyone—the youth leadership programs, agricultural activities, and educational opportunities. 4-H engages people of all ages, from elementary students to high schoolers, and creates partnerships between youth and adults. Blashack believes 4-H provides opportunities people have been looking for, which is why it’s been such an important part of many lives....
