The Wadena County Commissioners held their regular meeting on November 28, followed by the Truth in Taxation meeting.

Truth in Taxation

Commissioner Bill Stearns explained the purpose of the meeting was to explain what the taxes are spent on and the proposed budget and levy. The difference between the budget and levy is covered by state and federal grants. The proposed budget this year is $30 million and the levy is approximately $10 million, so the taxpayers of the county pay that $10 million. This is not a meeting about individual property taxes. That is the spring Board of Equalization meeting.

One woman shared her concern over a $30,000 increase on her assessment and she asked the commissioners to quit raising seniors’ taxes. Stearns explained that would have to come from the state legislature to prevent them from raising taxes on seniors. He would like to see that happen in Minnesota. . .
