Wadena County Commissioners: Verndale residents plead with commissioners to keep DAC store open

by Trinity Gruenberg
The Wadena County Commissioners held their regular meeting on Tuesday, July 23.
Citizens Speak Out Against Closure of Verndale DAC Store
Concerned citizens Ruth Anderson and Joann Thurston shared their concerns about the commissioners approving closing the Verndale Grocery and Treasures Too store.
It’s a store, a coffee place, and a place for the developmentally disabled to work. They asked the commissioners to reconsider closing the store.
They cited it is the only grocery store in town and would cut off access to groceries for some. Many people come to shop in the thrift area, and they are an asset to the community.
Commissioner Mike Weyer asked if they had ideas on how to increase revenue. Thurston said there was talk about writing a grant. Chair Murlyn Kreklu shared that the store wasn’t profitable, and the county didn’t fund it....
