by Trinity Gruenberg
The Independent News Herald and Verndale Sun have a new reporter ready to cover events and tell your stories.
Kat Wiirre was born in Camden, New Jersey and moved to Minnesota in 1976 when she was in sixth grade. She graduated from Wadena High School in 1981. She graduated from Detroit Lakes Technical College in 1986 with a degree in practical nursing and was employed as an LPN for 20 years.
She met her husband Miles “Smiley” Wiirre in 2005, married the same year and moved to Hewitt.
She has two daughters, Krystle, 30, of Verndale and Kelsey Schwartz, 29, of Roseville.
Smiley has two children, Heather Warren, 42, of Wadena and Jeremy Wiirre, 40, of Miltona.
Between the kids, they have eight grandchildren, five girls and three boys.
In the couple’s spare time they enjoy gardening, motorcycling, fishing, hunting and playing cards with friends. Kat has been the captain of her bowling team, Monday Night Early Birds, for the past five years.
They attend the Hewitt Methodist Church where Kat was given the opportunity to take a weekend class to become a Certified Lay Servant Speaker five years ago. Since then she has preached at the Hewitt, Sebeka, Rose City, Henning, Fergus Falls and Long Prairie United Methodist Churches. Kat currently preaches the last Sunday of every month at the Perham United Methodist Church.
“My passion since I was a young child has been reading and writing. I enjoy writing all of my own sermons,” shared Kat.
She loves her job as a reporter as it also feeds her passion for reading and writing.
“I enjoy researching articles and meeting new people when doing interviews for the newspaper,” said Kat. “I have quite a bit to learn with the photography part of being a reporter. Lucky for me I have amazing co-workers who are good at giving me great guidance and advice.”
Kat also works part-time at Central Lakes College in the cafeteria as a dietary aide.
“I look forward to learning more about our local communities,” added Kat.
