Wielenberg honored as one of six Transportation Specialists of the Year

by Karin L Nauber

Mandy Wielenberg may not have dreamed of becoming a school bus operator when she was young, but it certainly is an occupation that fits her to a “T”.

She got her bus license when she was 18 years old and started driving when she was 19.

“She’s going into her 28th year of driving bus. Her dad drove out of Melrose and convinced her to get her license,” said Katie (Aksamit) Gaida who is the vice president of operations at Aksamit Transportation Inc (ATI).

It’s a decision Wielenberg has not regretted.

Earlier this summer, Wielenberg was honored at the School Bus Operator’s Association (MSBOA) Summer Conference for her dedication to not only her job but to the many students she has driven to school, home, events and more.

“We always take pride in our ATI family. This week we are taking extra pride in a very special driver on our team! We are thrilled to announce that Mandy Wielenberg out of Long Prairie has received the Transportation Specialist Award from the MSBOA at their annual summer conference!

“Only six individuals are awarded this honor each year in the state; we could not be more proud of Mandy! She always gives her heart to her students and puts their safety and wellbeing before anything else. She acts as a mentor to her students and if you’ve had the joy of getting to know her, you know she has the best stories of their interactions.

“It’s drivers like her who make a real difference in our school communities, fostering an environment where every child feels valued and safe,” read a Facebook post from the Aksamits about Wielenberg....
