A mock train accident drill was held in Verndale on September 14. The scenario played out near the community center when a train car carrying crude oil (portrayed by the semi and water tanker) derailed and collided with a semi full of weed killer (portrayed by the car), killing two and injuring several nearby pedestrians and drivers of the vehicles. Crude oil leaked across the area as the semi burst into flames.
Some of the injured screamed in agony and confusion as emergency crews arrived to assess the scene, douse the flames and control the leak. The injured were taken to a decontamination area before being sent to the hospital. A Code Red alert was issued to the Verndale residents about the incident and they were told that they would need to evacuate due to the chemicals. . . .
